Trimming & Pruning
Good pruning keeps shrubs shaped, healthy and in scale with the property. Timing depends on the plant — we schedule cuts so flowering shrubs keep their blooms.
◆ Why it matters
Why it helps
Plant-specific timing
Spring-flowering and summer-flowering shrubs are pruned at different times.
Clean, natural shapes
Shaped for the plant and the architecture, not over-sheared.
Clear sightlines
Keeps walks, signage and windows unobstructed on commercial sites.
Debris hauled away
Clippings removed and walks blown clean.

◆ Timing & conditions
When this work is done best.
Correct pruning timing depends on the plant, not on a single yearly date.
Best window
- • Late winter and early spring, before growth begins, suit many deciduous shrubs and structural cleanup.
- • Spring-flowering shrubs are best pruned shortly after they finish flowering.
- • Light shaping of hedges and evergreens is commonly done in early summer.
Workable window
- • Dead, damaged or hazardous growth is removed at any time of year.
- • Late-season hard pruning is avoided on plants that would push tender new growth before frost.
Weather
- • Pruning is avoided during extreme heat when plants are already stressed.
- • Wet conditions are avoided on plants where handling spreads problems between them.
Site conditions we check
- • Plant species and whether it flowers on old or new growth.
- • Proximity to walls, walkways, windows and utility lines.
- • Overall plant health and how much material can reasonably be removed in one season.
- • Height and access; large tree work is outside the scope of shrub pruning.
When we postpone
- • Spring-flowering shrubs shortly before bloom — pruning then removes the flowers.
- • Plants under visible stress that need recovery time.
- • Work requiring climbing or removal of large limbs, which is referred out.
How to prepare
- • Tell us which plants you want kept full and which you want reduced.
- • Point out any plants with sentimental value or specific shape expectations.
- • Clear access around beds and hedges.
Aftercare
- • Water after significant pruning during dry stretches.
- • Expect flushes of new growth after shaping; a follow-up touch-up may be wanted.
- • Avoid heavy feeding right after hard pruning.
Frequency
- • Most hedges hold shape with one to two visits per season.
- • Structural pruning on shrubs is usually a once-a-year job at the right time for the species.
Why timing matters: Pruning at the wrong point in the cycle costs a season of flowers or pushes growth at the wrong time. Timing is set per plant, not per calendar.
Timing guidance is general for the Chicago area. Every property is different, and this service is not the right fit for every site or every season. We confirm suitability, timing and scope during an on-site assessment before any work is scheduled.
