    ◆ Timing & conditions

When this work is done best.

Hardscape installs run through most of the year, but base work depends on ground conditions.

    Best window

    • • Late April through early November is the strongest window for paver patios in Chicagoland.
    • • Spring booking (February–April) usually secures the widest choice of install dates for the same season.
    • • Late summer and early fall often have the most stable, dry ground for excavation and compaction.

    Workable window

    • • Early spring installs are possible once frost is out of the ground and the excavation area drains.
    • • Late fall installs can proceed while the base can still be compacted properly and joint materials can be set.
    • • Deep-winter installs are generally not scheduled; frozen or saturated subgrade cannot be compacted correctly.

    Weather

    • • Excavation is paused during heavy or sustained rain — saturated soil will not compact to spec.
    • • Polymeric joint sand needs a dry surface and a dry window after activation, so that step is scheduled around forecast rain.
    • • Sealing, when included, is scheduled for dry days with moderate temperatures.

    Site conditions we check

    • • Access for a mini excavator, skid steer or wheelbarrow route from the street or side yard.
    • • Known utility locations — public locates are requested before digging.
    • • Existing drainage patterns and downspout discharge points around the patio area.
    • • Soil type and how the area holds water after rain; heavy clay areas need a deeper or modified base.

    When we postpone

    • • Standing water in the work area that has not drained after a rain event.
    • • Frozen or thawing subgrade that cannot hold compaction.
    • • Unresolved drainage or grading problems that would undermine a new patio — those are corrected first.

    How to prepare

    • • Clear patio furniture, planters, grills and pets from the work zone.
    • • Confirm gate widths and any access restrictions before the crew arrives.
    • • Mark private lines the public locate service does not cover, such as irrigation, invisible fence and low-voltage lighting.

    Aftercare

    • • Keep heavy vehicle traffic off a new patio surface until we confirm the joints and edges are set.
    • • Light settling of joint sand in the first season is normal; a top-up may be needed.
    • • Sweep and rinse with plain water; avoid deicing salts that can pit some paver surfaces.

Why timing matters: Paver work lives or dies on the base. Timing the excavation and compaction for workable ground is what keeps the surface flat through Chicago freeze-thaw cycles.

Timing guidance is general for the Chicago area. Every property is different, and this service is not the right fit for every site or every season. We confirm suitability, timing and scope during an on-site assessment before any work is scheduled.
