    ◆ Timing & conditions

When this work is done best.

Wall builds depend on excavation conditions and how the slope is currently draining.

    Best window

    • • Late spring through fall is the most reliable window for excavation, drainage stone and block setting.
    • • Dry late-summer conditions are ideal for cutting into a slope without sidewall collapse.

    Workable window

    • • Early spring builds are possible once the ground is thawed and the trench holds shape.
    • • Late fall is workable when backfill and drainage stone can be placed and compacted before hard freeze.

    Weather

    • • Excavation into a slope is paused during heavy rain; wet cuts slough and compromise the base.
    • • Backfilling is scheduled so drainage stone is not placed into a flooded trench.

    Site conditions we check

    • • Wall height, slope angle and what the wall will hold back — walls over roughly four feet need engineered reinforcement.
    • • Where water travels across the slope today, including downspouts and neighboring runoff.
    • • Soil type, since clay and sandy soils behave differently behind a wall.
    • • Property lines, easements and permit requirements for taller walls.

    When we postpone

    • • Continuous water flow through the excavation area that has not been diverted.
    • • Frozen ground that prevents proper base trenching and compaction.
    • • Unclear property line or permitting status.

    How to prepare

    • • Confirm property line locations before design is finalized.
    • • Clear plantings, fencing or structures that need to be relocated.
    • • Discuss access for block delivery — wall block is heavy and needs a staging area.

    Aftercare

    • • Keep the drainage outlet at the base of the wall clear of mulch and debris.
    • • Avoid stacking soil or heavy loads above the wall beyond what the design allows.
    • • Report any bulge, tilt or persistent seepage early — small issues are correctable.

Why timing matters: A retaining wall is holding wet soil. Building it when the trench is stable and the drainage layer can be placed dry is what keeps the wall straight in later years.

Timing guidance is general for the Chicago area. Every property is different, and this service is not the right fit for every site or every season. We confirm suitability, timing and scope during an on-site assessment before any work is scheduled.
