◆ Timing & conditions
When this work is done best.
Sod can be installed across much of the season, but only where it can be watered.
Best window
- • Spring and early fall offer the most forgiving establishment conditions.
- • Fall installs benefit from cooler air with soil that is still warm.
Workable window
- • Summer installs are possible with committed daily watering.
- • Late-fall installs are limited by how much the sod can root before the ground freezes.
Weather
- • Sod is not laid on frozen or waterlogged ground.
- • Extreme heat installs are scheduled early in the day and watered immediately.
Site conditions we check
- • Water access and a realistic watering plan — sod without water will fail regardless of quality.
- • Existing grade; low spots are corrected before sod is laid.
- • Sun exposure, since heavily shaded areas may not sustain sod long term.
- • Soil condition and whether topsoil needs to be added.
When we postpone
- • No available watering during the establishment period.
- • Unresolved drainage or grading issues.
- • Frozen ground.
How to prepare
- • Confirm hose or irrigation coverage across the whole area.
- • Clear the area of debris, and plan access for pallet delivery.
- • Keep pets off the new lawn during establishment.
Aftercare
- • Water deeply immediately after install and keep the soil beneath the sod consistently moist at first.
- • Avoid traffic until the sod knits down and resists lifting.
- • Delay the first mow until the roots hold and mow high with a sharp blade.
Why timing matters: Sod is a living product on a clock. It goes in when the property can water it — otherwise the install is scheduled for a better window.
Timing guidance is general for the Chicago area. Every property is different, and this service is not the right fit for every site or every season. We confirm suitability, timing and scope during an on-site assessment before any work is scheduled.
