Mulch & Decorative Rock
Fresh mulch or decorative rock gives beds a finished, maintained look. We edge, prep and install at the right depth so beds stay clean and plants stay healthy.
◆ Why it matters

Clean, defined beds
Crisp edges separate beds from turf and hardscape.
Right depth
Installed at a sensible depth — never piled against trunks or siding.

◆ Timing & conditions
When this work is done best.
Bed refreshes are usually a spring job, with a second option in fall.
Best window
- • Mid-spring, after cleanup and once beds are edged, is the most common time for mulch.
- • Fall mulching is a good option for beds that were missed in spring.
Workable window
- • Mulch and decorative rock can be installed any time the ground is not frozen and beds are accessible.
- • Rock installs, including fabric underlayment, are less season-dependent than mulch.
Weather
- • Very wet beds are left to drain before installation so material is not worked into mud.
- • Windy days are avoided for fine shredded material near patios and pools.
Site conditions we check
- • Existing mulch depth — new mulch is not piled onto thick old layers.
- • Bed edges and whether re-edging is needed first.
- • Drainage patterns; rock in a wet bed can trap water against a foundation.
- • Whether rock or mulch actually suits the planting — rock is not right for every bed.
When we postpone
- • Frozen or snow-covered beds.
- • Beds that need weed removal, edging or plant work first.
- • Sites where rock would be installed over an unresolved drainage issue.
How to prepare
- • Point out plants you want protected or preserved.
- • Confirm the material and colour before delivery.
- • Clear a driveway or staging spot for bulk material.
Aftercare
- • Keep mulch pulled back from trunks and siding.
- • Expect natural colour fade over the season on dyed products.
- • Top up thin areas rather than adding a full new layer every year.
Frequency
- • Most beds look their best with a refresh once a year.
- • Rock beds need periodic weeding and occasional top-up rather than annual replacement.
Why timing matters: Mulch is most useful when it is the right depth at the right time. Adding it after cleanup and edging is what makes a bed look finished rather than buried.
Timing guidance is general for the Chicago area. Every property is different, and this service is not the right fit for every site or every season. We confirm suitability, timing and scope during an on-site assessment before any work is scheduled.
